Restoring Windows System Image (HP EliteBook 8470w)

Short Story

If you get the error trying to restore your Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10 with the “Repair disk Windows” (it is not a Windows version specific problem):

“The system image restore failed.Error details: Windows did not find any disk which can use for …….Ensure that disks are online and no disk are excluded by mistake. (0x80042414)”

Try using the "Application and Driver Recover DVD" from HP, by loading the driver file:
:\HP_RESTORE\swsetup\INTELRST\Drivers\x64\iaStor.inf

Whole Story

I always like to have a system image of each of my computers.

After having bought a new notebook (laptop), a HP EliteBook 8470w “Mobile Workstation” it came with Windows 7 pre-installed.

My first step was perform a system image using Clonezilla.
I also performed a system image with Windows 7.
After a while I needed to restore my system from the image.

After restoring with Clonezilla my notebook did not restart any more.
The cause was, that the notebook has an SSD and a HD configured to work together in RAID 0 with “Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST)“ and Clonezilla seems not beeing able to recognize such “fake RAIDs”.

So I tried to restore with my “Repair disk Windows 7 64-bit”, but the program could not see the internal notebooks disks.
I got the following error message:

The system image restore failed.
Error details: Windows did not find any disk which can use for …
….
Ensure that disks are online and no disk are excluded by mistake. (0x80042414)

I solved this problem by using the "Application and Driver Recover DVD" from HP, by loading the driver file
:\HP_RESTORE\swsetup\INTELRST\Drivers\x64\iaStor.inf

  1. I get the same error message (0x80042414) when trying to boot up using a clone of my `Windows 8` put onto a larger capacity hard-drive.
Even with the Boot repair disc, all I get is another Microsoft waste of my life. One has to ask if they need punishing.
